Elea – Velia
Barnìa is inside the Archeological Park of Elea, greek colony created in 540 bc by exiles from Focea (today Foca in Turkey).
Elea is famous because of its philosophical school of Parmenide and Zenone that are the basis of Western culture.
What remains of the greek city is: the archaic village, Venus’ temple base (that today is the base of the Medioeval tower) and the famous “Porta Rosa” (“Rose-colured Gate”) which is the first greek round arch descovered. Probably it is the symbol of the relationship with Etrurians who used the unknown arch.
In the Roman age, Elea was a thermal and commercial centre.
The Archeological area can be reached by car or walking for 10 minutes.
